Coaching

Tips
  • Keep practice times around 60 to 90 minutes. Kids have short attention spans but still need exercise. Keep the time limit appropriate for the age/skill level.
  • Be sure to always start practices on time, if not early. It helps kids (and their parents) to get in the habit of being on time for games and practices.
  • Focus each practice on an important skill that needs improvement. If better setting of the ball is needed, devote most of the time to this skill. The skills focused on will change for each practice.
  • There are three basic parts to each skill, make sure to work on each part with each skill
    • preparation (your starting position)
    • execution (performing the focus of the skill)
    • follow through (recovering back to the starting position)

Your Responsibilities as a Coach
    • Always provide a safe practice environment for the players.
    • Communicate in positive ways, with as much encouragement as possible.
      • Your communication involves not only players, but also parents and volleyball referees. Communicate in a positive way and show that you have the best interest of the players at heart.
    • Teach the skills to be successful in the sport.
    • Teach the rules of the sport.
    • Help the players develop a positive attitude about the sport.
